Pediatric Rehabilitation
North Kansas City Hospital recently expanded its pediatric outpatient rehabilitation services to offer greater access to pediatric-trained occupational, physical and speech-language pathology therapists.
Pediatric therapists are trained to relate to children at all ages and stages. With a dedicated pediatric focus, our therapists bring fun and playfulness to therapy sessions to motivate children while meeting their therapeutic needs. Parents or guardians are present so they can learn what to do at home to make a lasting change for development and progress.
Our speech-language therapists specialize in identifying and responding to delays in communication and language development in children. When we identify delays, we encourage families to seek intervention with our speech therapists as soon as possible for the best results.
Our pediatric-trained speech therapists can help with:
- Developmental delay. We work with children experiencing developmental delays affecting their verbal expression and articulation and how they understand communication in verbal, non-verbal and written form.
- Articulation. We work with preschool age and older children to improve your child's ability to make clear, distinct sounds in speech.
- Language. We work with preschool age and older children to improve the ability to use and understand language, while addressing listening skills, and the ability to follow verbal directions. Therapy also can help with social communication disorders and deficits in written language and reading comprehension.
- Auditory processing. We work with children from age 7 and up who have difficulty understanding speech or following directions in noisy environments because their ears and brain don't fully coordinate.
- Voice. We work with all ages of children who have nodules, polyps or other issues affecting their vocal cords and voice.
- Fluency. We work with children who struggle with stuttering, planning word choice or sequence of words, or other fluency issues so they can effectively express their thoughts and ideas.
- Feeding difficulties. We work with children from birth to preschool age who have feeding problems due to medical conditions, poor oral motor skills or other issues. Occupational and speech therapists may work together to treat feeding disorders.
- Post-concussion cognitive evaluation and treatment. We assess and provide treatment for children who continue to have deficits such as attention, memory, language and executive functioning skills after a concussion.
Occupational therapy helps children who have a physical, sensory or cognitive disability. This therapy can help children do everyday tasks like eating, putting on shoes and socks, focusing on learning, writing, and playing with toys or other kids.
Early treatment can help prevent potential problems with behavior, promote future success in school, improve social interaction and increase the chances of improvement overall.
Our pediatric-trained occupational therapists can help with:
- Developmental delay. We work with children experiencing developmental delays affecting fine motor skills, sensory processing and self-care.
- Feeding disorders. We work with children who are picky eaters or are reluctant to eat different textures, and those who have difficulty chewing and swallowing. Occupational and speech therapists may work together to treat feeding disorders.
- Fine motor coordination. We work with children who have difficulty with the precision, dexterity and coordination of their hands that make it difficult to write or do other tasks.
- Mild sensory integration. We work with children on the autism spectrum who have mild sensory processing issues to help them feel more comfortable with the stimulation in their environment.
- Orthopedic injuries. We work with children and teens who experience sprains, strains, and fractures of the hands, wrists, arms or shoulders to restore function. We also treat children with traumatic hand injuries, including tendon repairs and amputations.
- Post-concussion visual assessment and treatment. We assess and provide treatment for children who have had a concussion and continue to have deficits in vision, difficulty concentrating, and sensory processing.
Pediatric therapists are trained to relate to children at all ages and developmental stages. They also train caregivers so they know what to do at home with the child to promote development and progress.
Our pediatric-trained physical therapists can help with:
- Developmental delay. We work with children experiencing developmental delays in gross motor skills and gait disturbances due to muscular dystrophy, spina bifida, cerebral palsy, etc.
- Orthopedic injuries. We work with children and teens ages 10-21 years old who experience sprains, strains, sports injuries, back pain, or other issues to restore function.
- Post-concussion vestibular evaluation and treatment. We assess and provide treatment for children who have had a concussion and continue to have dizziness and other symptoms.
- Torticollis. We work with children who have this condition that causes trouble turning the neck and head tilt to one side.
