Sports Medicine

Sports Medicine

Our Sports Medicine program specializes in evaluating and treating musculoskeletal and neurological injuries for patients of all ages and all athletic ability. This includes helping young adolescents and teenagers get back to their sports as well as weekend warrior adults competing on and off the field or those who need speed, strength and agility for their day-to-day activities.

A therapist works closely with you to develop a customized treatment plan to meet your recovery goals and to prevent future injury.

Our team, facilities and equipment provide athletes access to the latest evidence-based treatment to put you on the fast track back to your playing environment.

Our Facilities

We offer fully equipped, state-of-the-art exercise gyms with aerobic and strengthening equipment as well as open mobility areas for jumping, running, golf swings, pitching and throwing. Therapy options include aquatic therapy, blood flow restriction training, manual techniques such as dry needling and Instrument-Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization, concussive/vestibular treatment, and agility testing and treatment.

For maximum recovery, our rehab team simulates “return to sport” activities in your therapy. Our main campus clinic located at 2700 Clay Edwards Drive also includes a warm and cool water therapy pool area.

Back in the Game

When Tomas Barrera felt a 'pop' during a soccer game, he knew something had torn in his knee. Tomas had surgery to fix a torn ACL and meniscus then came to North Kansas City Hospital's Physical Therapy and Sports Medicine program for rehabilitation.

Our clinics are well equipped to get you back in the game.

Our specially trained aquatic therapists will create a customized water exercise program to meet your specific needs. The buoyancy of water can initiate mobility and strength early in your recovery process. This helps to reduce stress on the joints and pain while progressing your mobility.

Blood Flow Restriction Training is a treatment option that allows patients to make greater strength training gains while lifting lighter loads and reducing the stress placed on limbs.

We offer two forms of manual techniques, dry needling and Instrument-Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM), and Cupping to reduce pain and improve movement restrictions so you can return to sports and activities.

Dry Needling

With dry needling, therapists use a thin needle to penetrate the skin and stimulate underlying muscular/connective tissue restrictions.

Cupping

Cupping increases blood circulation to the area where the cups are placed. This may relieve muscle tension, which can improve overall blood flow and promote cell repair. It may also help form new connective tissues and create new blood vessels in the tissue.

Instrument-Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM)

Instrument-Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM) is a soft tissue mobilization technique that allows therapists to detect and treat soft tissue disorders using stainless steel instruments to promote tissue healing.

A concussion can be debilitating for athletes. It's challenging to determine when the right time is to return to sports.

To make that determination, our specially trained therapists perform a thorough assessment, including vision and balance testing, to evaluate how your brain responds to movement of the body, head and environment. This information helps therapist to develop an individualized treatment plan so you can safely return to life activities or sports.

Returning to sports and activities requires careful testing to make sure your balance, joint stability and reactivity are up to par. As your recovery progresses, your therapist will introduce more agility activity to prepare your muscles, ligaments and joint receptors for activity. Before you're released to activity, we will conduct testing and simulation drills to assure your safe return.
