One in 10 people who get COVID-19 will have symptoms for 12 weeks or longer. This condition is called Long COVID. It affects people of all ages, including those who were previously healthy and who did not require a hospital stay due to COVID-19 infection.
The most common symptoms of Long COVID are extreme exhaustion or fatigue, brain fog that leads to problems with memory and concentration plus worsening of COVID-19 symptoms after exercise.
Other Long COVID symptoms often plague people, too. They may flare-up without warning. Some people experience just a few of these symptoms while others have several at once. These Long COVID symptoms include:
- Anxiety and/or depression
- Chest pain or tightness
- Diarrhea or stomach pain
- Dizziness/Vertigo
- Heart palpitations
- Fever, cough, headaches, sore throat, changes in smell or taste
- Rashes
- Insomnia or difficulty sleeping
- Loss of appetite
- Muscle or joint pain
- Shortness of breath
- Tinnitus and/or earaches
Treatment
The good news is physical, occupational and/or speech therapy can help you manage your Long COVID symptoms through education on:
- Pacing activity for your current energy level
- Breathing techniques
- Improving memory skills
- Monitoring your heart rate
- Strengthening swallowing and speaking skills
- Resuming daily activities safely
