February is a busy time with Valentine’s Day and American Heart Month. It’s a good time to show extra love and attention to our sweethearts and also to our hearts.
Here are some ways for you to put your heart into this special time of year.
-
Indulge
Treat your partner to indulgent and healthy treats (yes, those two words can go together). If you’re thinking chocolate, stick to dark or semi-sweet. Dark chocolate has antioxidants. It can also help lower cholesterol and heart disease risk. Surprise that special someone with semi-sweet chocolate-covered strawberries. They’re healthier than the usual box of milk chocolates.
A fruit bouquet or charcuterie board are also great choices. Make a fruit bouquet with berries, oranges and cherries. These fruits are rich in antioxidants and can reduce risk factors for heart disease. Make a charcuterie board with almonds and walnuts to help lower cholesterol.
-
Be Fun and Healthy Together
February doesn’t have the corner on love. Celebrate your relationship by choosing an upcoming event and setting a training schedule together. You can lean on each other to stay motivated for the race. It’s harder to skip a training day when you have someone holding you accountable.

Show Love to Your Heart
Take time this month to get a heart checkup. Make an appointment with your primary care provider for a cholesterol and blood pressure check. If you don’t have one, find a Meritas Health provider and schedule online.
You can also get screenings to detect your risk for heart disease and stroke with the Calcium Scoring Cardio Scan for only $50 and the Carotid Artery Evaluation MRI for $40. Request a screening appointment.
Caring for your heart will help ensure you can enjoy many more Valentine’s Days with that special someone.
