Raise your hand if you remember when your only job was to have fun. You were a kid, right? Being a grown up is all about working and being productive. But, don’t discount playing around. Goofing off can actually be good for you.

Somewhere along the path to adulthood, we transition from play time to productive time. When did we start believing every minute of every day should be filled doing something useful, productive and meaningful? At some point, we began seeing play time as wasted time and somewhat of a guilty pleasure.

Take Time Out

But, good news … research shows adults need play time just as much as kids. Whether it’s playing catch with your kids, swinging in a hammock on a warm spring day or hosting a game night with friends, carving out some time to cut loose is good for your mind, body and spirit.

Grown-up worries can blow stress levels sky high. When we distract ourselves with a bit of fun, especially fun that involves laughter, we reduce our stress level. In turn, our stress-related backaches, headaches, fatigue and sleep problems may subside. If you focus your play on a physical activity, you’ll improve your overall fitness and energy levels, too.

And, don’t forget to put a little play into your work day. Birthday potlucks and holiday parties boost morale and can make work more fun. Step out of your office once in a while and take advantage of company social outings and rec leagues.

If you’re missing out on play time, don’t worry. Each day brings a new opportunity to find the fun. All it takes is a little … work.
