Weight Gain

Chemotherapy and hormonal medicines, combined with fatigue, depression, hormonal changes and metabolic imbalances, may cause some patients to gain an average of 10-15 pounds.

Hormone treatment may cause an increase in appetite and fluid retention, which accounts for much of the initial weight gain. Weight gain usually levels off after a few weeks.

Pre- and perimenopausal women gain more weight than women in menopause because of a decrease in estrogen. Some chemo medicines cause ovarian toxicity, which can lead to early menopause and increased weight gain.

Regular exercise and a well-balanced, reduced-fat diet, can counteract weight gain and improve daily function and quality of life.
