Lymphedema

OT wrapping arm for lymphedema treatment

Lymphedema

Your body's lymphatic system is vital for lymph fluid drainage. Lymphedema is tissue swelling caused by the build-up of fluids when lymphatic vessels or lymph nodes are removed or damaged, such as during cancer treatment. This sometimes happens days, months or even years after cancer surgery or radiation.

Lymphedema typically develops when excess fluid collects in the arms and legs causing those areas to swell. It also can occur in other parts of the body, including the breast, trunk, head and neck. Symptoms include swelling, fullness or tightness, and reduced range of motion. Skin changes, infections and breakdown are also a risk if lymphedema goes untreated.

Treatment

If you notice these symptoms, bring them to your doctor's attention. The earlier lymphedema is treated, the better it can be managed. Our Lymphedema Clinic includes specialized therapists who can help ease the fluid build-up and other symptoms.

Treatment also can improve skin condition, decrease risk of infection, increase range of motion of the affected body part, reduce swelling and improve your quality of life.

Treatment may include:

  • Manual lymphatic drainage, a gentle massage technique that stimulates increased lymphatic flow
  • Compression bandaging that helps decrease the size of the affected area and prevents repeat swelling
  • Fitting for a compression pump if necessary
  • Fitting for compression garments
  • Exercises and flexibility training to improve lymphatic flow and reduce swelling
  • Fibrotic techniques to decrease tissue firmness
  • Education about how to manage lymphedema and what to watch for
