When to Visit Your Gynecologist
It’s important to meet with your gynecologist each year for an exam. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends that you start having pap smears within three years of becoming sexually active or by age 21. Pap smears are an effective way of screening for cervical cancer.
You should also visit your gynecologist if any of the following apply to you:
- Bleed after sexual intercourse
- Have menstrual problems, such as heavy bleeding, irregular periods or spotting between periods
- Have unusual or persistent vaginal discharge
- Need testing for gynecologic conditions
- Think you or your partner may have a sexually transmitted infection
- Have a history of a sexually related illness
- Have a mother or sister who developed breast cancer
If you are pregnant, you’ll need to schedule an appointment with an obstetrician if you haven't already.
