Women often see their OB-GYN more than any other doctor. An OB-GYN is your confidante through some of the most personal and important moments of your life.

Your OB-GYN provides gynecologic and obstetric care from young adulthood through post-menopause. That’s why you need someone you are comfortable talking with about any health issues.

“Women's health is about so much more than having babies and obstetrical care,” said Brian Lovitt, DO, an OB-GYN with Meritas Health Pavilion for Women. “It's a health specialty all of its own. Women have different needs at different stages of life. It’s important to find a doctor who can provide comprehensive care.”

What to Consider When Picking an OB-GYN

Use these ideas as a starting point.

Consider your current and future needs.

  • What healthcare services do you need now?
  • What services will you need in the future?
  • Do you need both obstetric and gynecologic care or just gynecologic care?

Both gynecologists and obstetricians specialize in women’s health, but perform different services. Gynecologists provide routine Pap smears and pelvic exams. They may also help with menopause, endometriosis, heavy bleeding during periods and other women’s health issues. Obstetricians provide care during pregnancy, childbirth and the postpartum period.

“From birth control counseling to maternity care, to cancer screenings, menopause management, treating abnormal periods and preventive care, OB-GYNs offer a full range of women’s health services,” said Amanda Humiston, MD, an OB-GYN with Meritas Health Obstetrics & Gynecology.

Look for comprehensive care.

Learn about the practice.

  • How far away is the practice from your home or office?
  • Does it accept your health insurance?
  • Is it a large or small practice?
  • What are the hours?
  • If you’re pregnant or plan on becoming pregnant, does the OB-GYN practice at your hospital of choice?

Another consideration is if the practice includes nurse practitioners and physician assistants. These healthcare professionals can be helpful when you need to see someone quickly. Also, ask about the range of training and expertise among the doctors.
