Living in the moment isn’t easy when you’re running through your day at a mile a minute and trying to stay three steps ahead of a jam-packed calendar. But, it’s essential.

Mindfulness is so important to a healthy mind, body and spirit that you can’t afford not to try it. Settling your brain down for even 30 seconds, let alone 5 minutes, may seem impossible. We challenge you to give it a try by following these six steps for six days.

Easy Meditation

Step 1: Get comfy. Find a spot in your house where you won’t be disturbed (when you stop laughing, continue reading). Your quiet place may be in the far reaches of your clothes closet, and that’s OK.

Step 2: Move into position. Do what feels right. The traditional meditation pose is sitting upright with your legs crisscross applesauce. Some people lie down; others relax in a recliner. Stand on your head if that works for you.

Step 3: Relax your body and your mind. Set a timer for 5 minutes and close your eyes. Take a few deep breaths (in through your nose, out through your mouth). Breathe so deeply you feel it in your tummy.

Step 4: Focus on your breathing. Train your thoughts on the rhythm and repetition of your breaths.

Step 5: Keep your thoughts centered. It’s a given your mind will wander and start ticking off items on your To-Do list. When that happens, bring your thoughts back to your breathing.

Step 6: Stay committed. Meditation isn’t called a “practice” for nothing. Calming your mind and learning to be in the moment doesn’t come naturally. The more you practice, the better you’ll get.
