For some of us, shopping for a sports bra ranks right up there with trying on swimsuits and skinny jeans. In other words, it’s frustrating and maybe even a little depressing. But finding the perfect sports bra doesn’t have to be so hard.

When it comes to working out, a sports bra isn’t just an accessory; it’s a necessity. In fact, it’s as important as sports equipment and just as hard working. The ultimate sports bra should give you support, comfort and protection. That’s a tall order.

When selecting your style, keep these sports bra basics in mind.

Fit

A sports bra should fit a little more snug than your everyday bras, and your breasts should feel lifted. The best ones have adjustable straps, moisture-wicking fabric and individual cups for support (a.k.a. encapsulation).

Purpose

When it comes to sports bras, one style does not fit all. If you’re doing low-impact activities like yoga or weight lifting, a lighter weight compression bra will work just fine. But if you’re running, strutting your stuff in Zumba or trying some other high-impact activity, you’ll want to put some boundaries on the bounce. Go for a compression bra that presses your breasts more closely against your chest, or wear an encapsulated bra.

Test It

You don’t buy a swimsuit without trying it on, so don’t buy a sports bra without putting it through the paces. Give it a mini workout in the privacy of your dressing room. Jog in place, do some squat jumps or bust out some boxing moves.

The next time you shop for a sports bra, keep these tips in mind. They’ll make tracking down the perfect sports bra a little easier and, hopefully, a little more fun.
