Breasts are made of fatty tissue, supportive tissue and ligaments. Their major source of support is collagen, a protein that provides firmness and elasticity to the body’s organs and tissues. When breasts lose collagen, they start to sag. All of the habits below contribute to a breakdown in collagen. They also speed up the aging process and damage your skin.

  • Drastic dieting. A continuous cycle weight loss/weight gain causes your skin, and your breasts, to lose elasticity. Maintaining a consistent weight can help.
  • Poor posture. Hunching over a laptop, text neck, opens new tab and slouching on the sofa all contribute to poor posture, which can make your breasts sag. So sit up straight and stand up tall, with your head up and shoulders back. (Bonus: Good posture also gives you a natural confidence boost.)
  • Smoking. Yet another good reason to quit.
  • Skipping sunscreen. Yes, your chest needs sunscreen, too.
  • Wearing the wrong bra. Whether you’re at work or in the gym, the right bra matters. Too much movement breaks down collagen. A professional bra fitting can help you find the support your breasts need. To get started, read: Gear Up the Girls, opens new tab
