The winter holidays are synonymous with a thankful spirit. But sometimes, our gratefulness gets lost somewhere between the mashed potatoes and mac 'n cheese. This year, count more blessings and fewer calories.
More Gratitude
Here’s how to appreciate what you have even more.
- Write a thank-you note to someone you truly appreciate.
- Develop a habit of writing down one or two blessings every day.
- Smile at everyone you see.
- Donate belongings you no longer need to someone who’s making a new start.
- Give a genuine compliment to a stranger.
Less Gravy
Enjoy holiday meals without going overboard.
- Exercise in the a.m. to burn calories before the big meal.
- Satisfy cravings with one or two tablespoons instead of a heaping helping.
- Swap standard ingredients for healthier ones. Applesauce can sub for butter in baked goods. Greek yogurt can stand in for sour cream and mayo.
- Savor your meal by eating slowly and enjoying every bite.
The bottom line? The holidays are a time to relax and indulge. One day of holiday eating won’t tip the scales. If you mind your portions and find ways to squeeze in a workout most days, your party dress will still fit like a glove on New Year’s Eve. And, getting back into your diet and exercise routine will be that much easier come January.
