Denice Morrison and Mary Calvert

Denice Morrison, left and Mary Calvert, were recognized by Ingrams Magazine as 2016 Healthcare Heroes.

Every day, lives are saved and people get better thanks to healthcare professionals, who truly are heroes. Each year, Ingram’s Magazine recognizes a few of the local healthcare heroes. This year, they selected Denice Morrison, Surgery educator; and Mary Calvert, who recently retired as an orthopedic nurse, for their dedication and accomplishments in their professions.

Denice Morrison

When Denice Morrison, MSN, RN, recalled her first encounter with the nursing profession, she smiled. “The impression someone can have on you at age 18 is amazing. It was at that moment, as a patient, I decided to become a nurse,” Denice said. Now, 37 years later, Denice has touched every facet of surgical nursing, from pre-op and post-op care to surgery. A natural leader, she trains new staff and manages the six-month perioperatve program. Her volunteer work with medical mission trips to Cambodia is equally impressive and illustrates her commitment to the profession.

Mary Calvert

At the urging of a childhood friend, Mary Calvert, BSN, RN, enrolled in nursing school and never looked back. She came to NKCH in 1974 and worked for over 26 years in orthopedic nursing. She spent the last years of her career as a charge nurse, which allowed her to maintain her love of bedside nursing while also performing administrative functions. “I always wanted to do bedside nursing because I felt it was my strong suit,” Mary said. Most staff remember Mary as always on the move on 9th Floor Orthopedics. She now stays busy outside of work with various activities including planning her 19th annual medical mission trip to the Dominican Republic.
