6 Tips for Soothing Winter Skin

Old Man Winter took it easy on Kansas City the past few years. Unfortunately, this year he’s back in full force. If the seemingly endless days of sub-zero wind chills aren’t enough to make you want to pack your bags for warmer places, maybe the dry, itchy skin that comes with winter will. Don’t fly off to Florida just yet. First, try these tips to help your skin stay healthy while you hibernate.
Hands up. Ever wonder why your hands get so dry in the winter? It’s because they have fewer oil glands than the rest of your body so the skin cracks more easily. Apply moisturizer before you put on gloves, and try not to wear wet gloves.
Hold the hot shower. Nothing’s better than a long, hot shower when you come in from the arctic air. But, super-hot showers strip your skin of needed oils. Instead, shower with warm water, and use a mild soap or body wash.
Give your lips some love. Use a lip balm with SPF 15 or higher often. Men are especially at risk for developing skin cancer on their lips.
Moisturize. Apply an alcohol-free, non-scented moisturizer immediately after you step out of the shower, while your skin is still damp.
Shade your face. If you go outside, wear a hat with a brim to protect your face and scalp from harmful UV rays.
Slather on the sunscreen. Even though it’s winter, sunscreen is still essential if you’re spending any time outside. The sun’s rays are even stronger this time of year, and skin cancer is still a danger. Remember to add an extra layer on your nose.
