Stephen L. Reintjes, Sr., MD

We are excited to welcome Stephen L. Reintjes Sr., MD, as our new president and CEO.

KC Native

Steve is a true Kansas Citian. He went to Rockhurst High School, earned his medical degree from the University of Kansas School of Medicine and completed his residency in neurosurgery at the University of Kansas Medical Center.

“At the end of my residency, a group of North Kansas City Hospital physicians asked me to start my practice here,” Steve said. “At the time, I couldn’t afford office space, so I rented Larry Hollenbeck’s [currently a neurologist with Meritas Health Neurology] desk for $150 a month. It didn’t take long for me to fall in love with North Kansas City Hospital.”

Within five years, Steve became president of NKCH’s medical staff, of which he’s been a member for 30 years. During that time, he held several executive leadership positions, including director of spine surgery. Before becoming CEO, he led Meritas Health Neurosurgery for seven years.

Becoming CEO

Steve’s desire to do something broader for the community drove his decision to seek the chief executive officer position. “I’ve spent my whole life caring for the people of Clay, Platte and Ray counties,” he explained. “This opportunity allows me to continue serving these great communities but in a different way.”

The leadership qualities Steve developed during his medical career will be extremely beneficial in his new position. “Neurosurgery taught me how to face challenges, make decisions and work toward successful outcomes,” he shared. “These are uncharted times, but the coronavirus is just one disease we need to treat,” Steve said. “We’re here to meet all the health needs of the community, and we’ll do that by continuing to deliver excellent care at every level.

“I am so thankful for the opportunity to continue to serve the community, and I deeply appreciate the efforts of every single person here at North Kansas City Hospital as we walk forward,” Steve added. “There’s not a medical community I’d be prouder to lead than this one.”
