High-Risk Pregnancy
If you have a high-risk pregnancy, you want a maternal care team you can depend on like the maternal-fetal medicine (MFM) specialists at North Kansas City Hospital. Our experts help ease the way, getting you the specialized care you need — whether it’s for a complex health condition, multiple births or pregnancy-related problems.
What’s High-Risk Pregnancy?
A high-risk pregnancy is when you or your baby have a higher-than-normal chance of having problems or complications.
You might have a high-risk pregnancy if you:
- Are 40 or older
- Are carrying more than one baby
- Have a history of pre-term labor
- Have a medical condition, such as heart or kidney disease
- Have high blood pressure or an increased risk of blood clots
- Have pre-eclampsia
You may also have a high-risk pregnancy if your baby has a risk of chromosomal or congenital abnormalities, genetic disease, growth restriction or infection.
Perinatology Services
If you have a high-risk pregnancy, you’ll see a maternal-fetal doctor, also known as a perinatologist. Your doctor and MFM team will make sure you and your baby stay as healthy as possible throughout your pregnancy with prenatal tests, such as:
- Amniocentesis to help your doctor get information about your baby's health from a sample of your amniotic fluid
- Comprehensive ultrasound to check the health and well-being of the fetus using imaging technology
Neonatal Care Unit
After delivery, a high-risk baby may need care from a neonatologist in our neonatal intensive care unit.
