Community Resources During Cancer

Access to resources can bring peace of mind during a difficult time. These resources can help answer questions about financial issues, where to find supplies, and how to get the emotional support you or your family may need. 

We also have a list of options for assistance in our community. These include information for uninsured patients, and community-based resources for mental health, drug/alcohol abuse, financial assistance and more.

Gilda's Club Kansas City
Gilda's Club is a free community that provides support and education to those impacted by cancer, which includes your family and friends.

  • Community Resources - information for uninsured patients, DPOA, community-based resources for senior services, mental health, Meals on Wheels, financial assistance. transportation assistance and more.
  • Cancer Action - this organization offers a variety of support services dedicated to reducing distress and promoting wellbeing for those at all stages of their cancer journey. Two locations: Independence and Overland Park.

Lodging is sometimes an obstacle for patients who live far from their cancer treatment center, adding unnecessary stress to the lives of patients with cancer. There are a variety of options available to help patients afford housing costs while they receive treatment. 

Our Oncology Social Worker can assist with the any necessary referrals. 

ACS's Hope Lodge
The American Cancer Society's Hope Lodge in Kansas City, Missouri is a free housing resource for cancer patients who reside at least 40 miles from their treatment center. 
 

Joe's House
Joe's House has existing agreements with hotels and accommodation establishments across the U.S. who provide discounts and financial support for cancer patients. 
 

Ronald McDonald House Charities
The RMHC program reduces the emotional burden and financial stress of assisting your child with cancer care and treatment. There are several in the Kansas City area.
 

Sisters Network Inc.
The Breast Cancer Aid Program provides financial assistance and resources for accommodation, copays and office visits.
 

Open Arms 
Open Arms is a free resource that provides temporary housing for as long as a patient is undergoing active treatment. Eligibility requirements include, patient and family must reside 50+ miles away from the Cancer Center and be in need of temporary housing for at least 30 days.  

Hosts For Humanity Housing Program
 Accommodations allow for a patient, who lives over 30 miles from the Cancer Center, and one caregiver to stay in the homes of volunteer families while undergoing treatment (meals and transportation are not included). The requirement include a background check. 
 

Extended Stay Housing Program
This free nationwide housing program extends its services to cancer patients in the Kansas City are residing more than 40 miles from their treatment center. In addition, it also provides free transportation to and from the cancer treatment center. 
 

Emergency Rental Assistance Program
For 18 months, qualified seniors, low-income households, disabled individuals and other people in need are entitled to receive grant funds. The financial assistance received is to be allocated for housing rental costs. 
 

HUD Emergency Solutions Grant
This grant is an option if you are at immediate risk of homelessness as a result of being delayed with your rental payments. The program provides temporary housing for cancer patients and offers short-term rental assistance, overdue rent payments, advance payments for rental deposits, utility deposits, moving expenses, mediation, legal services and more. To be eligible for this program, you must have an annual income that is less than 50% of the median income in your area.  
 

CSC Airbnb Housing Program
Cancer Support Community, in partnership with Airbnb, provides free temporary accommodation and support services to cancer patients in the U.S. who must travel at least 100 miles for treatment and have proven financial need.
