What is a dietitian?

A registered dietitian nutritionist (RDN) is someone who has completed education and supervised training to provide nutrition therapy and counseling. They are part of the healthcare team and work with a patient’s health history, eating habits and exercise routines to build a nutrition plan unique to each patient. RDNs use creative strategies to help with meal planning, grocery shopping and mindful eating.

Reasons to see an RDN:

1. Assistance with food selections to avoid allergies, sensitivities or intolerances

It is easy to be overwhelmed by a new diagnosis of a food allergy, sensitivity or intolerance. This can lead to boring diets and possible nutrient deficiencies. An RDN can help you understand foods to avoid and provide substitutions for a balanced and tasty diet.

2. Diet counseling for digestive issues

Working alongside your primary care doctor, an RDN can recommend foods not to eat – known as an elimination diet – to find food choices that will improve your gastrointestinal or GI condition.

3. Guidance for healthy eating

Between what you see on TV, hear from friends and family, and read on the internet, eating healthy can seem like a challenge. RDNs provide science-based advice and develop a plan that works for you.

4. Help with diet choices for managing chronic diseases

An RDN can help you better understand your condition and how food may affect it. They can develop a personalized eating plan that includes nutrients you need to better manage your chronic condition.

5. Nutritional support before, during and after pregnancy

RDNs can help ensure you are getting the nutrients you need to support good health if you are trying to conceive, are currently pregnant or are a new parent.

Healthy eating and proper nutrition play a big part in maintaining good health. If you could benefit from working with an RDN, talk to your primary care doctor for a referral to nutrition counseling at North Kansas City Hospital.
