North Kansas City Hospital welcomes Courtney Johanning to the newly created position of chief development officer. Johanning, who assumed leadership in late March, brings 12 years of hospital fund development experience.

According to Stephen Reintjes Sr., MD, president and CEO of North Kansas City Hospital and Meritas Health, this addition will help strengthen the hospital’s strategic initiatives.

“When our visionaries sought to build a hospital on the hill in North Kansas City, they set the foundation for us to provide hope and healing to every life we touch,” Dr. Reintjes Sr. said. “While our footing is strong in continuing community charitable giving, our strategic planning efforts guided us to realize the establishment of a philanthropic arm would further help us support our organization’s mission.”

The founders also could not have foreseen a yearslong pandemic.

“For more than two years, local companies and grateful patients have emerged to share financial contributions in appreciation of the quality care we provide,” Dr. Reintjes Sr. added. “Their desire to give back to our organization further reinforced our decision to foster philanthropic outreach to support our mission.”

At a large health system, Johanning moved up through the ranks to ultimately serve as senior development director of major gifts. Her vast knowledge, leadership and expertise to engage and motivate donors will help NKCH and MH further enrich its workforce, workplace, technology and the lives of those served in the community.

In this new role, Johanning will create and execute a strategic fundraising plan by identifying and cultivating existing and potential funders to bring about long-lasting results that grow the organization. Johanning’s vast experience exemplifies her ability to create measurable organizational growth in the nonprofit sector. In her prior position as senior development director of major gifts, she co-led the development team through a successful $100 million capital campaign and managed the health system’s top five donors. She holds a master’s degree of public administration in nonprofit management from the University of Missouri-Columbia.

“From fundraising and donor networking to crafting compelling campaign strategies and securing significant revenue growth, Courtney has a proven record of success that will align individual donors and corporate partners with our organization’s long-term mission,” Dr. Reintjes Sr. added.

Johanning has long held an unwavering passion for making an impact in the community.

“From my experiences as a young volunteer to my first job, serving my neighbors has given me purpose, and now I am humbled and honored to take on this new role,” Johanning said. “This effort to further support North Kansas City Hospital’s mission speaks volumes about its dedication to the health and well-being of our community. I’m excited to be a part of helping our hospital on the hill gain even greater ground through philanthropic outreach.”
