U.S. News & World Report has named North Kansas City Hospital as the third Best Hospital in the Kansas City metro area. This honor recognizes the hospital’s performance in complex care in medical specialties and in common procedures and conditions. NKCH also ranked High Performing in nine procedures and conditions.

“We are honored to be recognized for the high-quality care we provide,” said Stephen Reintjes Sr., MD, president and CEO of North Kansas City Hospital and Meritas Health. “This recognition is a testament to the work of our exceptional, dedicated and caring doctors, nurses and staff. They exemplify our mission to provide hope and healing to every life we touch.”

The hospital received High Performing ratings in nine adult procedures and conditions:

  1. Back Surgery (Spinal Fusion)
  2. Colon Cancer Surgery
  3. Diabetes
  4. Heart Attack
  5. Heart Bypass Surgery
  6. Heart Failure
  7. Hip Replacement
  8. Kidney Failure
  9. Knee Replacement

The latest edition added ratings for seven new procedures and conditions that “emphasize the importance of targeted research and care that provides patients and their doctors with data-driven decision support.” Of these, North Kansas City Hospital garnered four High Performing ratings – Back Surgery (Spinal Fusion), Diabetes, Heart Attack and Kidney Failure.

According to the publication, “The Best Hospitals procedure and condition ratings focus on specific and more commonly required individual procedures and conditions, rather than on broader specialties. The goal is to evaluate how well hospitals perform in each procedure or condition – and not just with the most difficult cases, as with the specialty rankings, but with the full range of patients. Hospitals that treated enough patients to be evaluated are rated one of three ways for each procedure or condition: high performing, average or below average.”

U.S. News & World Report assessed more than 4,750 hospitals nationwide. Of those, only 706 were recognized. Data used came from a period predating the COVID-19 pandemic and were not affected by the pandemic's impact on hospitals.
