At North Kansas City Hospital we pride ourselves on having a work environment filled with compassion, teamwork and respect. We provide personally focused orientation and offer a variety of professional development activities to help ensure success as an RN at NKCH.

Our Nurse Residency Program helps new RNs gain the confidence and skills to successfully transition to professional nursing. During this program, new RNs will be supported by Nursing Directors, Clinical Education Specialists, Preceptors and Mentors.

The ANCC Practice Transition Accreditation Program® (PTAP) sets the global standard for residency programs that transition registered nurses (RNs) into new practice settings. Utilizing ANCC’s evidence-based criteria, the NKCH Nurse Residency Program demonstrates excellence in transitioning nurses to new practice settings.

Program Details

  • The Nurse Residency Program is accredited as a Practice Transition Program by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation in Practice Transition Programs.
  • The Program is a one-year residency curriculum designed to expand the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to move from entry-level competence toward proficiency and expertise.
  • We integrate our Professional Practice and Care Delivery Models into the Nurse Residency Program to help our residents develop sound decision-making skills and clinical judgment.
  • Monthly professional development activities combine lectures, case studies, discussion groups and hands-on experiences with educational sessions that focus on our residents’ clinical experiences.
  • Interprofessional shadowing experiences help residents develop collegial relationships with patient care team members and better understand how those clinicians contribute to patient outcomes.
  • Our formal mentor program and carefully chosen preceptors provide residents with the support they need to experience a positive transition into nursing. The mentor and preceptor programs are driven by the Nursing Core Values of respect, teamwork, excellence, compassion, caring, integrity, and accountability.
  • All residents complete an evidence-based practice or quality improvement project that integrates scientific and experiential evidence to enhance the hospital’s nursing practice and culture.
