What is Pulmonary Rehabilitation?

USNWR High Performing Hospital - COPDYour doctor or pulmonary specialist may recommend pulmonary rehabilitation as part of your treatment plan if you live with a lung disease like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Our outpatient program means you’ll visit our facility for care and then return home.  

Pulmonary rehabilitation can help you:

  • Become more independent through individualized education, exercise and support 
  • Control and reduce symptoms and complications
  • Lower your chances of needing to be admitted to the hospital

A Pulmonary Care Team You Can Trust

The pulmonary rehabilitation team at NKCH features respiratory therapists, registered nurses and exercise physiologists. Many similar programs do not offer this range of specialized care. Our team provides education and rehabilitation services in a unique group exercise format that provides important psychosocial benefits to patients.

Pulmonary Rehabilitation Sessions: What to Expect

Get the exercise, education and personal guidance you need to be more self-reliant when participating in our pulmonary rehabilitation program.

Your First Session

At your first session, our multidisciplinary team: 
  • Performs a thorough health assessment 
  • Reviews your medical history
  • Talks to you about your quality of life and rehabilitation goals, such as returning to work, spending more time with family and friends or walking up and down stairs more easily

Nine-Week Undergraduate Program

After your first session, you’ll take part in our nine-week undergraduate pulmonary rehabilitation program which includes: 
  • Strength and endurance training 
  • Energy conservation techniques 
  • Education about lifestyle changes, nutrition and stress management
 
To get the most out of pulmonary rehab, we recommend attending two, two-hour sessions each week. We offer sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays at:
  • 8 a.m.
  • 10 a.m.
  • 2 p.m.
  • 4 p.m.

Continue Your Success After Rehabilitation

Once you complete our undergraduate rehabilitation program, we encourage you to continue building on your progress by attending our self-directed graduate rehabilitation program. We offer two-hour sessions Monday-Friday at:

  • 6:30 a.m.

  • 12:30 p.m.

Insurance Coverage

Depending on how long you participate in the program and progress toward your goals, most insurance plans cover our undergraduate pulmonary rehabilitation program. Be sure to verify coverage with your insurance plan. If you have questions about your insurance, call 816.691.1575.
