Screening Why How Often
Blood pressure check  Shows if you have high blood pressure (hypertension), which has no symptoms but can cause lasting damage if left untreated. Every year
Blood test and urinalysis Screens for conditions before you have symptoms. Examples include high cholesterol, diabetes, kidney disease and thyroid issues. Every three years
Electrocardiogram (EKG) Checks for any heart defects. Once at age 30
Physical exam Looks at overall health status and helps your provider intervene if needed. Every three years
Rectal exam Looks at overall health status and helps your provider intervene if needed. Every three years
Self-exams Helps you look for changes and find cancer in its earliest stages. Examples include testicle lumps, changing moles or freckles, lesions in the mouth and breast lumps. Every month (self)
Sexually transmitted diseases (STD) test Confirms if you have STDs, such as syphilis, chlamydia or HIV. Ask your provider
Tuberculosis (TB) skin test Screens for TB if you think you’ve been exposed or have symptoms. Every five years (ask your provider)
