Traumatic Brain Injury

After a significant traumatic brain injury, you will need continued expert neurological care and rehabilitation. You may have to relearn to walk, talk and perform other daily functions.

Treatment

At North Kansas City Hospital, rehabilitation is tailored to your unique needs. You may begin therapy through our inpatient rehabilitation unit and continue with outpatient rehabilitation.

Your rehab therapy team may include:

  • Physical therapists will work with you to regain mobility.
  • Occupational therapists will focus on improving your daily activities such as dressing.
  • Speech-language therapists will help with swallowing difficulties, eating, voice strength as well as language, attention, memory, and problem solving.
  • Meritas Health Neurologists

Post-Concussion Care

A concussion is a mild traumatic brain injury caused by a bump, jolt or blow to the head. Accidents, falls and sports injuries can result in concussions that may impact memory, concentration, vision, balance and reflexes, among other issues.

Treatment

Recovery from concussion is different for everyone. Sometimes symptoms worsen over time rather than improve. For those patients, we offer a specialized cognitive rehabilitation program to treat post-concussion syndrome.

A speech-language pathologist manages cognitive rehabilitation to help you deal with the side effects of a concussion such as concentration, memory, problem solving, thought organization and reasoning.

Our certified vestibular therapists are specially trained to help with dizziness, vertigo and balance issues.

Your vision, muscle strength, inner ear system and ability to feel sensations in your legs and feet work together to keep you steady on your feet. When an issue with one or more happens, you may experience problems with dizziness, balance, focusing and thought processing.

Our physical therapists, occupational therapists and speech-language pathologists work together to treat balance, vestibular (inner ear) and post-concussion disorders and related symptoms. They develop a treatment plan that can help you get back to the activities you want and need to do.
