Rehabilitation therapy sessions focus on building muscles and regaining strength. You want to make the most of each session. What you eat before your session makes a difference. Certain foods give your body the energy it needs to complete the exercises.
- Best choices: Foods high in complex carbohydrates and lean protein
- Avoid: Heavy or greasy foods, which can slow you down
- Make sure you stay hydrated before, during and after your sessions
Snacks (1-2 hours before)
- Dip apple slices into peanut butter; drizzle with honey for added sweetness
- Drink a fruit smoothie with orange juice; toss in some spinach for something different
- Enjoy a piece of fresh fruit or a small fruit salad
- Spread a slice of whole-grain toast with peanut butter, and top with banana slices
- Top plain Greek yogurt with bananas, strawberries or blueberries; sprinkle on some granola
Meals (2-3 hours before)
- Fix a baked potato; go easy on the toppings
- Mix apple pieces, banana slices, berries or almonds into a bowl of oatmeal
- Make a small bowl of whole-wheat pasta with tomato sauce
- Scramble some eggs, and pair them with avocado slices
