North Kansas City Hospital and Meritas Health have received several recent recognitions. In U.S. News & World Report’s Best Hospitals 2022-2023 rankings and ratings, NKCH tied for third Best Hospital in the Kansas City metro area. NKCH and MH also received six awards — surpassing previous years — from the American Heart Association. The Commission on Cancer granted a three-year accreditation for NKCH’s cancer services.
High Performing
The U.S. News & World Report honor recognizes the hospital’s performance in complex care in medical specialties and in common procedures and conditions. NKCH also ranked High Performing in 10 procedures and conditions and received a Best Regional Hospital designation.
The annual rankings and ratings are designed to assist patients and their doctors in making informed decisions about where to receive quality care for challenging health conditions or elective procedures
NKCH increased its High Performing ratings from nine to 10 adult procedures and conditions:
- Aortic valve surgery
- Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
- Colon cancer surgery
- Diabetes
- Heart attack
- Heart failure
- Hip fracture
- Hip replacement
- Kidney failure
- Knee replacement
The publication evaluated each hospital’s performance using a variety of measures, such as survival rates, complication rates, patient experience and level of nursing care. The Best Hospitals methodology factors in data from the American Hospital Association, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, professional organizations and medical specialists. U.S. News assessed nearly 4,500 hospitals nationwide
Heart and Stroke Care
The AHA honors recognize the organization’s commitment to following up-to-date, research-based guidelines for heart disease and stroke treatment. By garnering this year’s achievement awards in stroke and heart failure care, the organization met higher standards than last year.

Cancer Care
The Commission on Cancer’s accreditation status required meeting 34 quality care standards, passing a survey and maintaining levels of excellence in care delivery. The accreditation is a quality program of the American College of Surgeons.
Cancer treatment at NKCH and MH involves a comprehensive, patient-centered program with prevention, early diagnosis, cancer staging, treatment, rehabilitation, lifelong follow-up for any recurrent disease and end-of-life care.
