Lab Services for Cancer Care
Testing is critical to cancer care. It’s integral to diagnosing the disease, guiding treatment decisions, and determining cancer spread or recurrence. It can also be used to provide prompt results or adjust treatment plans as needed.
Your doctor may recommend a range of lab tests during your cancer treatment. Some of the common blood tests used in cancer care include:
- Blood protein, which looks for abnormal protein levels in the blood
- Circulating tumor cell (CTC), which detects pieces of tumors in the bloodstream
- Complete blood count (CBC), which measures levels of red and white blood cells, as well as platelets
- Tumor marker, which identifies cancer-associated chemicals in the bloodstream
In addition, your doctor may recommend blood tests as part of genetic testing and counseling. In those who qualify for genetic testing, the results are used to help you understand how your family history may affect your health. They’re also used to help you and your doctor plan treatment options.
