The start of a new year brings an opportunity to set fresh health-related goals and commit to better behaviors. Despite the best of intentions, most New Year’s resolutions are abandoned because they are too ambitious, too broad or lack a plan.
While setting targets like “lose weight” or “get in shape” may sound good, your goals won’t be met without proper planning and preparation. Keep your momentum and achieve your New Year’s resolutions with these tips.
Be specific.
Having too many goals makes it difficult to focus. Narrow down your list to one or two areas to address in the coming year. Be precise. Instead of saying “spend more time with family,” define steps to meet that goal. It could be to visit family members a certain number of times each month or to set aside one night a week for a family activity.
Create a realistic plan.
New Year’s resolutions don’t have to be achieved by the end of January. Break your goal into smaller, more attainable pieces to set yourself up for success. Next, brainstorm ways to achieve these marks and how long they might realistically take.
Try something new.
Don’t recycle old resolutions that haven’t worked. Give yourself a fresh start and incorporate new strategies into your plan.
Plan for obstacles.
Think of potential barriers you may encounter and how to address them. Consider keeping a journal to track both your progress and your setbacks to help you stay focused and motivated.
Find an accountability partner.
Connect with a friend or family member who’s also working on their health and support each other to stay focused and accomplish your goals.
Give it time.
It takes a while to establish new habits and behaviors. Be patient with yourself. Savor the small victories and learn from setbacks. Eventually, with practice, your resolution will become second nature.
